Crack the Social Code: How to Network like a Boss When You're an Introvert

By Tiffany Brazda

So you’re an introvert. Even Queen Bey was shy. In a 2021 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Beyoncé shared her own journey from shyness to stardom.

“Being shy taught me empathy and gave me the ability to connect and relate to people. I’m no longer shy, but I’m not sure I would dream as big as I dream today if it were not for those awkward years in my head,” she said.

Introverts are natural dreamers and if you can use those skills to your advantage, you can turn that social anxiety energy into motivation to make the right connections.

For all our introverts out there, we’ve got some tips to get you chatting up the right people IRL in no time.

Love yourself first

Elisha Suttles, a mental health counselor at Intentional Healing based in Omaha, Nebraska, said getting to know yourself better and being proud of what you love about yourself is essential.

“Have self-talks – ask ‘why do I feel so introverted?’” she said.

Really talk to yourself about why you are uncomfortable and you may find that what you’re scared of is rarely reality.

Buddy up

We shy girls tend to gravitate toward extroverts. Bring your extroverted bestie along with you to your next networking event. Pal up and approach as a team. With a friend doing the introductions, the convo will start flowing and you’ve got your in.

Stay comfortable

We all know what makes us feel uncomfortable, but also what makes us look uncomfortable.

Suttles said to stay in control and avoid anything that will make matters worse.

“If you have sweaty palms, maybe don't wear lotion,” she said.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Practice how you’re going to introduce yourself and think of a question you want to ask. Prepping may actually ease your fears.

You’ve got this.
