Summer is the best time to get involved in the community through an internship, so now is the time to start thinking about applying for one. Why intern? It’s a great opportunity for you to grow, discover, and connect yourself to future possibilities and mentors. The key to finding an impactful internship is to find something you are passionate about.

Amy Wehlander, the communications and engagement manager at the nonprofit organization, No More Empty Pots, said, “When you care about the mission, you're more likely to be engaged and to grow.”

One example is the Claire M. Hubbard Science Internship at No More Empty Pots.

“It’s a great opportunity for high school students interested in natural and environmental sciences in Omaha...” Wehlander said.

When the time for applying rolls around, it may seem intimidating to most teens, leading to anxiety about not knowing where to start. The solution to this is to be your unique self.

“Be authentic in your application,” Wehlander said, “Let your passion come through!”

Here are some key tips that will help with your applications:

  • Take time to learn about the organization.
  • Allow interests to shine through.
  • Get help from a trusted individual to read through your application

These all help show off respect and attention to detail – key aspects of any career field. Taking advantage of your internship is the next course of action to make the most out of your summer.

“Ask questions, take initiative, and be open to learning – even from mistakes,” Wehlander encouraged, stressing that “Every day is a chance to grow.”

Making the effort to branch out, connect with colleagues, and form relationships is just as important as the job itself. At the end of summer, you’ll be able to walk into the fall with experience, relationships, and newfound knowledge tucked under your belt, helping you achieve a successful and fulfilling future.
