Finding the Perfect Fit with Second-Hand Treasures

Finding the Perfect Fit with Second-Hand Treasures

By Kathryn O’Connor

Ah, the thrift store – a place where chic, trend-setting influencers treasure hunt pre-loved gems. If you’re considering a style change, secondhand shopping could be your ticket to developing a unique look on a budget, all while boosting your sustainable impact on the planet.

The popularity of thrift stores and consignment shops, especially among teens, reflects a significant shift in consumer habits and attitudes, explained Kelly Valentine, co-owner of 1404 Collective, who has been curating gently used styles for nearly 20 years.

“Teens and young adults are more environmentally conscious than previous generations, and they are increasingly aware of the negative impact of fast fashion on the planet,” she said.

Whether you’re a thrifting connoisseur or a novice, being patient is key.

Don't get discouraged if you don't find what you're looking for right away,” she said. “Be open to trying new styles and colors and vibes you wouldn’t normally try. Play around. Fashion should be fun. You might be surprised at what you find.”

Go for the classics

Love it? Thrift it. The name on the tag doesn’t matter as much as the fit and durability. Look for timeless pieces perfect for your capsule wardrobe, such as vintage clothes making a comeback or one-of-a-kind apparel to define your individuality. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch an occasional high-end designer piece.

“My style has been transformed by filling my closet with high-quality basics rather than fast fashion clothes,” said Averie Smith, 16, who found her favorite Urban Outfitter jeans at 1404 Collective.

Pro-tip: Don’t miss the return rack.

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, right? Well, this sentiment can be a savvy strategy. Return racks create a curated section of merchandise others have deemed worthy enough to try on. Save time sifting and look at the items left behind. That’s exactly where Layla Lewis, 15, found her favorite jeans a couple of years ago.

“They’re bootcut bedazzled,” she said. “And I love them.”

Modern meets vintage with online consignment.

Thrift stores exude charm, but don’t forget that online vintage reselling is all the rage! Check out websites like Poshmark, ThredUp and Depop – they’re hotspots for discovering hot Y2K fashion. Online shops give you the power to search for exactly what you want. Must-have items include oversized sweaters, baggy cargo pants, crewnecks, vintage denim, pop culture reference T-shirts, jerseys, and sneakers.

Don’t forget the finishing touches.

Elevating your style is all in the little details, so don’t get too fixated on the attire alone. Thrift stores are a trove for retro purses, perfectly worn-in shoes, and elegant jewelry, each more whimsical than the last.

Is It Worth a Shot? Absolutely!

Not every trip will result in a complete closet rebrand or your next Instagram post, but the sheer excitement of stumbling upon your newfound treasure makes it worthwhile. For instance, Valentine once found a vintage necklace with a diamond-studded penguin pendant, complete with a bejeweled fish inside, and she said a $20 Christian Dior dress she later sold for $500.
